Stop! Don’t Lose Your Fingers… SawStop invented by Stephen Gass

Stephen Gass, the inventor of SawStop has done something extraordinary. He created a table saw which will stop the cutting blade within 5 milliseconds of detecting contact between your finger and the table saw blade with the purpose of preventing amputation of your “digits”

I have been a “part time” woodworking hobbyist for years, and the most stressful part of the hobby for me is when I have to deal with my table saw. “Knock on wood,” I have never been injured yet, probably because I am so extremely careful. However, there are circumstances which can occur even when taking precautions that can end up pulling your hand into a spinning table saw blade – and the best thing you can hope for when that happens is finger amputation; there can be much worse injuries if anything higher up than your fingers get pulled in.

The saw looks like an excellent wood cutting tool it is apparent that the team which Stephen put together designed the table saw “on purpose” – it does not appear that they have traded any features or functions which you would expect from a machine at this price point – however, I have not personally tried this one out yet – although, I am saving my pennies to get one! I would love to get one to try out and review on one of my insurance sites. The implications of this type of machine are far reaching.

In my opinion, I believe insurance companies should be falling over themselves to provide worker’s compensation discounts to shops who use this type of machine.

Check out their site and watch their videos, most importantly, if you are a woodworker, take the leap and get this saw, or advocate its use in your local high school – This machine does good.

I Bought Two! Samsung SyncMaster 206BW

Samsung SyncMaster 206BW

Okay – flat out – I’m not getting paid for this review by Samsung, I have no affiliation that I know of with them, but I have got nothing but good things to say about this 20 inch widescreen 1680 x 1050 panel.

I bought my first one as soon as it came out – the same time I bought the Gateway GT5468 – I wrote about in Computers SUCK! Now, Let Me Tell You How I Really Feel…

The panel has been operating with no issues at all for the past 7 months. This thing kicks butt! Mine had a $249 pricepoint and depending on where you buy it (got mine at Fry’s), but I still don’t think there are any other panels out there offering the specs this one does.

About 2 months ago, I was in the market for another panel, so I went out shopping and again, for the money there was simply no other panel out there offering the specs that the Samsung SyncMaster 206BW has. The main specs I looked at, which seem to me to be the ones that make the most difference image quality wise were, Response Time – how quickly images are refreshed / redrawn on the screen; Image Contrast – a measure of the difference in pixel brightness from black to white; Type of input – Wanted to make sure I had both RGB & DVI available; Max Resolution – How much desktop “Real Estate” I could expect to get (in other words, it doesn’t matter if you have a 5000 inch display if the max resolution is 640 x 480…)

  • Response Time: 2ms
  • Image Contrast Ration: 800:1 / 3000:1 (dynamic)
  • Max Resolution: 1680 x 1050 which was good enough, but, I have to admit, I wish this was 1920 x 1200 – but that is the only item I wish was improved on this panel.
  • DVI & RGB

Compare this with another larger panel the Acer AL2216WBD, which while larger is the closest price range lcd monitor from CNETs Top Rated LCD Monitors is seriously lacking with:

  • Response Time: 5ms
  • Image Contrast: 700:1
  • Max Resolution: 1680 x 1050
  • Signal Input: DVI-D, VGA

And another on the CNET Editors’ Top Monitors, the HP W2007 ($260 – $284 current pricerange) with:

  • Response Time: 5ms
  • Image Contrast: 1000:1
  • Max Resolution: 1680 x 1050
  • Signal Input: VGA – but, according to CNET specs, this display does have a DVI-Digitaligital connection… so not sure what the full story is here.

Let me know what you think.

Computers SUCK! Now, Let Me Tell You How I Really Feel…

Well, I finally did it, I bought a new computer for the office… a beaut-i-ful machine!

It is my first Gateway – and for the price point, it is GREAT! I bought it from Fry’s Electronics, it is model number GT5468, the specs:

  • Intel Pentium Dual-Core Processor (E2160) – 1.8Ghz, 1MB shared L2 cache, 800Mhz FSB (Front Side Bus)
  • Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 – not blazing graphics, but they get the job done
  • 2 Gig Dual Channel DDR2
  • 400 GB SATA II Hard Drive with 8MB cache
  • All the other “bells & whistles” which come with machines these days
    • Memory Card Readers (15 in 1)
    • 10/100 Ethernet card (down on the Motherboard)
    • DVD +/- RW Dual Layer

The killer thing is, that this all came at a $599 price point, with none of those crappy rebate offers, where you have to wait for your money for 6 months!

I am happy with the purchase, but I have to be honest, setting this thing up is a real chore! Let me tell you, when you move machines, it is NOT an easy thing. I think I have something like 20 hours into this one so far, with at least another 8 to 10 to go before it is up to speed with my most recent machine.

At any rate, wish me luck, and I’ll catch ya on the flip side :)
